Helen Margaret “Meek” Gartley, 93, died peacefully at St. Vincent Randolph Hospital on January 15, 2018 from colon cancer.  She was born on December 25, 1924, on the family farm, near Union City, Indiana.  She was the youngest of eight children born to Della (McManama) Meek and George Washington Meek. 

Helen graduated from Wayne High School near Union City.  She married the love of her life, James W. Gartley, in Winchester, on Jun 30, 1946.  They were married 47 years until his death in 1993.  Helen spent many years working alongside her brothers, Kenny and Wilbur, at Bunsold’s Grocery.  She was also employed at Junior Town in Winchester.  She spent 20 years as the library aide at Winchester Community High School. 

Helen is survived by her daughter, Susan Symons (Dick Johnson) of Winchester; her granddaughter, Jill Symons (Jay Glitzer) of Brodheadsville, PA; her step son, Edward K. Johnson of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James W. Gartley; an infant son, Stephen Gartley; her only sister, Gladys Hangen of Arcanum, Ohio; her brothers, Virgil Meek, Wallace Meek, Harold Meek, Henry Meek, Kenny Meek, and Wilbur Meek.

Following Helen’s wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no services.  Memorials can be made to Cancer Services of Randolph County, 133 N. Meridian St., Winchester, IN 47394 or the Women’s Fund of Randolph County, C/O Community Foundation of Randolph County, 213 S. Main Street, Winchester, IN 47394.

Susan,
I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Gartley's passing. I have many fond memories of her from school. She was so helpful and always willing to listen, if you needed to talk.
May God be with you and your family in this time of need. Knowing that Mrs. Gartley is at peace hopefully will bring you comfort.
