Winifred “Winnie” Jean Kepner died on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Reid Hospital in Richmond. She was 89. Winnie was born on July 4, 1935, in Greenville, Ohio, to Earl and Edith (Hiser) Winkle.
Winnie worked for General Telephone/Verizon for more than 40 years. She was a telephone operator, completed training to climb telephone poles for repairs and was a facility assigner during her tenure. She also worked at the Winchester Community Library and Winchester BMV. Winnie was a former member of Moose Lodge No. 1977 in Winchester.
Winnie enjoyed watching a variety of sports, in particular IU, Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Reds. She was extra excited to participate in the family pool for the Indy 500 and NCAA basketball tournaments, especially when there was bragging and taunting between family members. Winnie enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and sudoku puzzles, gambling and reading the newspaper. She was always up for a game of bingo.
Winnie had a stubborn streak that she passed on to her daughters and granddaughters. She adored and was proud of her three granddaughters and great-granddaughter, and they loved their “Grammy” just the same.
Winnie is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Roger) Eadens, Winchester, Ind.; Kim Hoppe, Florida; granddaughters Melissa (Drew) Norby, Lindsay Reno (Josh Velazquez), and Leslie (Mike) Wales; great-granddaughter Bianca Velazquez-Reno; sister Bobbie (Jack) Lindsay, Florida; sisters-in-law Retha Winkle and Carolyn Winkle, both of Winchester; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers David Winkle and Larry Winkle.
There will be no public visitation. The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Goodrich Park free concerts, which Winnie loved to attend. Memorials may be sent to Winchester city building, C/O City Clerk Kerry Sayer, 113 E. Washington St., Winchester, IN 47394.
