Truman "Sonny" D Passmore

Truman D. Passmore of Reno, Nevada, died July 13, 2022 at the age of 97. Truman (Sonny) was born to Mildred E. Passmore (Goodhew) and Truman D. Passmore on February 17, 1925 in Winchester, Indiana. He grew up surrounded by loving family, including brothers, Jim, Gene and sister Janalee, and graduated from Winchester High School in 1942.

He entered active service July 21, 1943, and ultimately served as an Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class (Tail Gunner) on various vessels in the Asiatic Pacific. For his service he earned two Gold Stars (Air Medal), the Distinguished Flying Cross, Victory Ribbon, and three Bronze Stars (Asiatic Pacific, American Area).

After the service he attended Ball State and the University of Tucson, Arizona, from where he earned his bachelor’s in business administration and met his first wife, Pauline. They married, moved to Texas, and started raising their four children, Truman (TD), Douglas, Ann, and Charles. He worked in the cold storage business- first as a manager, then working his way up to a corporate regional vice president, and finally as a cold storage owner himself; his sons were at one time all involved in the family business. He consulted as an expert in his field for the Korean Economic Council and spent time there with Pauline.

Truman was athletic, a basketball player in high school and an avid golfer throughout his life. He possessed a natural inquisitiveness that he retained until the end of his life. Truman was a lifelong Rotarian, member of the American Legion, and spent two decades volunteering at the VA Hospital in Reno.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, daughter Pamela Sue, sons Charles and TD, and wife Pauline; a week after Truman’s death his son Douglas also passed away. He is survived by his wife Gloria, sister Janalee, daughter Ann, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 11am at Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester, Indiana, followed by a memorial gathering.
