Ruby “Maxine” Sterling, 86, of Winchester, Indiana, died after a brief illness at Reid Hospital on Thursday, December 28, 2023. She was born October 24, 1937, in Byrdstown, Tennessee, to Willie and Bonza Garrett. Maxine graduated from Union High School, Modoc, Indiana in 1956. She was a secretary at Morton Elementary School and Baker Elementary School for 30 years.
Maxine enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, sewing, baking, and listening to country music.
Maxine is survived by her two children, Mary Ann (Tim) Passmore of Winchester and Steve Sterling of Winchester, Indiana; two grandchildren, Ben (Miranda) Passmore of Winchester and Lexi (Jake) Woods of Knoxville, Tennessee; four great grandchildren, Delaney, Mosley and Emmalyn Passmore of Winchester, and Archie Woods of Knoxville, Tennessee; sister, Kathy (Don) Lovell of Winchester; and several nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Sterling; her parents; a brother, Willie Otto Garrett; and sisters, Shelby Jean Garrett and Trudie Simmons; and a brother-in-law, James Simmons.
The family would like to thank Pineknoll Rehabilitation Center and Reid Hospital for her care.
There will be a private family graveside service for Maxine, at the convenience of her family.
