Obituary

Phillip LeRoy Unger, 83, passed away, Thursday, February 11th, 2021 in his home surrounded by family.  He was born January 14th, 1938, in Winchester, IN, to Paul and Ruth Unger (Cox). 

Phil served in the Army National Guard from 1956-1965.  During his time, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was a Heavy Weapon Infantryman in Charlie Company 1st Bn 151st Infantry out of Winchester, IN.  He also received military qualifications for Expert and Sharpshooter Badge for the rifle and a Marksman Badge for the pistol.  On July 1st, 1965, Phil was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard.  He served on the Delaware County Draft Board for 20 years.  Phil received his associates accounting degree in 1963 from Fort Wayne Business College.  After college, he worked for different companies while building up his personal accounting firm on a part time basis.  In 1976, he was able to focus on his business full time and by January 1st, 1991 Phil incorporated his business as the sole stockholder for the corporation.  Phil was involved with three local churches, in many capacities, for over 20 years.  A proud Hoosier to the core, he was an avid Indiana University basketball fan.  He enjoyed boating, being on the golf course, and traveling with his wife, Erma.  He cherished all time spent with family and with his four legged companion, Sparky. 

Phil’s greatest love was his family. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, of 13 years, Erma Lea Unger (McCalister) of Yorktown; his constant companion, Sparky; his three children, Lisa Williams (husband, Robbie) of Muncie, Bryce Unger (wife, Sheila) of Deerfield, Bret Unger (wife, Aleisa) of Muncie; stepchildren, Ernie Heuss (wife, Christine) of Maple Falls, WA, Holly Montano (husband, Joe) of Muncie, David Heuss of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Brooke-Ashley, Chelsea (husband, Kyle), Elijah, Adrian, Alivia, Emerson, Landen, Leah Ann, Lukas, Leah, Layla, Lindsey (husband, Ronnie II), Jay, Kasen, Patrick, Nick, Laura, Nicole, Jessica, Ryan; great-grandchildren, Kya, Kylar, Kylix, Kylynn, Meila, Olina, Ronnie III, Elon; nephew, Gary Shaneyfelt (Lora); nieces, Debbie Shaneyfelt, Clara Lacy (Gary), Roberta Wilson, Renee Martzall (Tom), Kelly Weinzierl. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ruth Unger (Cox); sister, Maxine Shaneyfelt; brother-in-law, Bob Shaneyfelt; brother, Bob Unger; sister-in-law, MaryLou Unger; grandson, John. 

Calling Hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, February 18th, 2021, at Walker Funeral Home, 248 East South Street, Winchester, IN 47394. 

A service to celebrate Phil’s life will begin with calling hours at 12 p.m., followed by funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 19th, 2021, at University Christian Church, 2400 N. Nebo Road, Muncie, IN 47304.  Officiated by Terry Canfield with special words from Benny Tackett.  A private, family burial will follow at Garden of Memories.
