Mary Wickersham Obituary

Mary Jo Wickersham, aged 87, was peacefully welcomed into the gates of heaven surrounded by her family at Pineknoll Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, IN, on Sunday, June 30, 2024. There, her daughter and son were waiting to reunite with open arms.

She was born on September 4, 1936, to James and Marjorie Younger in Winchester, IN. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1954. Mary Jo always believed in working hard, for she was employed at Waltz Drugstore, the Law Offices of both William Gutheil and George Daly, the Randolph County Clerk’s Office, and Rickert Implement. Additionally, she was the co-owner of Perry’s Pub in Winchester. In 1984, her son, Scott, became the owner of the A&B Café and she took great pride in assisting him in any way possible. Here, she enjoyed visiting with the customers and was often found there early in the morning, chatting and sipping coffee. She continued her passion of assisting with this family business until the fall of 2022. She also enjoyed leisure time, whether it be hours by her pool, or extended vacations in Marco Island, Florida. Mary Jo also adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren, for she loved them dearly.

Mary Jo is survived by her grandchildren Randi (Brad) Whitesel, Valerie (Tom) Overleese and Travic (Chelsea) Wickersham; Her great-grandchildren Cameron (Kamron) Gough, Gannon Whitesel, Becca Overleese, Dawson Overleese, Lochlin Wickersham and Vaylor Wickersham, who she would refer to as “Big Boy”; son-in-law Steven Smith and daughter-in-law Vanessa Wickersham.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Keith Younger, her daughter, Janie Smith and her son, Scott Wickersham.

The family would like to thank The Lodge at Summers Pointe, Reid Hospital, Pineknoll Rehabilitation Center, and Keystone Hospice for their generous care over the last few months. Additionally, the family would like to thank Glenna Pittman, who assisted them with her care while she was at home and visited her very often at both Summers Pointe and Pineknoll, for she is a wonderful friend. Also, special thanks to Susan Frame, for she made an extra effort to travel to Winchester quite frequently to beautify her. Those that knew Mary Jo are aware of how important her hair appointments were to her. Lastly, thank you to Robert Hesser for being a helpful neighbor when she was at home. Additionally, he fulfilled all her A & B Café meal requests, complete with delivery and conversation; he made her smile with his humor on numerous occasions.

Services will be held on Monday, July 15 at Walker Funeral Home; friends and family are invited to call from 4pm-6pm, with funeral to follow.
