John Richard (Dick) Johnson, 77, of Winchester, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home with his loving companion of 38 years, Susan Symons, at his side on January 11, 2022.
Dick was known as a kind, generous, and caring man. His sense of honesty and trust were hallmarks of his life. He was always ready to help out a neighbor or friend who was in need of a helping hand.
Dick was the friendliest guy in town. He loved to talk to people, and he never met a stranger. As soon as he learned your life story, he was a friend for life.
Dick was born on April 10, 1944, in Winchester, IN, to J. Willard Johnson and Margaret Roby Johnson. Raised on a small farm near Saratoga, IN, he graduated from Ward-Jackson High School in 1962.
Dick enjoyed attending car shows, and loved anything FORD, especially 1957 T-Birds. He loved collecting Marlin advertising memorabilia with his brother, Tom Johnson, and reminiscing with his buddies about his 44 years as a machinist at the Portland Forge in Portland, IN.
Dick was the youngest of a group of retirees who built the Winchester Churches and Community Food Pantry where he and Susan worked for more than 10 years, and he was a member of the Food Pantry Board. He and Susan were also members of the board for the restoration of Ward Township District School #5 down the road from his childhood home. He was especially proud of tracking down and acquiring the original bell of the school and furnishing the school a restored wood stove. He spent countless hours clearing out the school, acquiring materials for the school, and assisting Mick Wolfe in building new windows for the school.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Sam Stilwell of Kokomo, sister Elinor Kindred of Winchester, and an infant brother, Harry Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Symons, her daughter, Jill Symons of Brodheadsville, PA, his daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Don Kiselewski of Jupiter, FL, his son, Tad Colby Johnson of Jupiter, FL, his three grandchildren, Katie, Chelsea, and Jackson Kiselewski of FL, and his brother, Tom Johnson, of Missoula, MT. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins across the country.
Following his wishes, no services will be held. Walker Funeral Home was entrusted with his services.
The family would like to thank Ron and Pam Ferguson, Sam and Rhonda Scofield, the Winchester Friends Church, Everheart Hospice, and all those who wore a blue bracelet and prayed for Dick during his illness. He will be missed, but the loving memories will stay with us all forever.
Memorials for Dick may be sent to Friends of Ward Township District #5 School c/o Susan Symons, 517 W. North St. Winchester, IN, 47394, or the Winchester Churches and Community Food Pantry c/o Pam Ferguson at the Winchester Friends Church.
