Jane Retter Obituary

Jane Retter passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024 at Reid Memorial Hospital.  She was born July 19, 1951 in Winchester, Indiana, the daughter of Bob and Madeline Retter.  She was a 1969 graduate of Winchester Community High School.  After high school she worked as a reporter for the Winchester News Gazette from 1970 - 1973.

She moved to New York City in 1973 where she worked for Software Sciences Co. until 1975, when she moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

She then worked for Atlantic Community College from 1977 - 1982, serving as Director of Learning Resource Center and as an ESL and Writing Tutor.

She next worked at Glassboro State College (NJ), which became Rowan University, as an Assoc. Director for Adult and Continuing Education, and Adjunct ESL Instructor from 1982 - 1988.

After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Rowan University (graduating Summa Cum Laude and being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa) she went to work for Educational Testing Services (ETS) from 1988 -2002.  She held a variety of positions here, the last being Special Assistant to the VP of School and College Services.

She moved to FL in 2001, and married to the love of her life, Jan Keener, on February 19, 2002.  While in FL, she worked for Barry University as an advisor/adjunct faculty member from 2002 - 2004.

Jan and Jane moved back to New Jersey in 2004.  She then worked for Mathematica as Manager for Editing and Production and Policy and Research until 2008.

Jane also received her Master’s Degree from Rider University in NJ, and won the Graduate Student of the Year Award.

Jane and Jan returned to Winchester in 2008 where she continued to do consultancy work for Mathematica.  Jane was whip smart and had a fantastic sense of humor, which she kept until the end through many physical setbacks.

She was an accomplished pianist and loved all kinds of music, especially jazz.  She had an excellent ear, and anyone off pitch drove her crazy.  She also loved British History and TV, linguistics, John Updike’s writing and Frieda Kohlo’s art.

Her greatest loves were her family, friends, cats, and most of all her husband of 15 years - Jan.  She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Bob and Madeline Retter, and her beloved husband, Jan Keener.

She is survived by her sister, Scottie Harvey; nieces Amy (Gary) Lawrence, Melody (Mike) Charleville, nephews Andy Harvey, Brock Harvey; Chris (Melissa) Harvey, as well as several great nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her cats, Bob and Max.

Services will be held Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Walker Funeral Home.  Friends and family may pay their respects from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m, followed by a brief service.  There will be a private burial at a later date.
