Douglas Lloyd Howard Hawley, 71, passed away peacefully after an extended illness.
Doug was a man who truly lived life to the fullest. An avid sports fan and a true Hoosier, his passion for IU athletics was legendary and only rivaled by his appreciation for a cold Budweiser, best enjoyed with his brother Joe and his best friend 3 at their favorite spot, the A&B Café. They were often referred to as the Three Amigos.
Above all else, Doug loved his family. He cherished his five siblings, his many nieces and nephews, and his fiancée, Mary Kay Miller. Doug will be fondly remembered for making sure the Easter eggs at the annual Hawley Easter egg hunt were generously filled with money, for insisting there was always plenty of ham at holiday gatherings, and for his determination to be first in line.
Doug enjoyed golfing and was deeply committed to ensuring the Tess Hawley Memorial Golf Tournament was held every year. The tournament has been a cherished Hawley family tradition since the passing of Tess fifteen years ago.
An outstanding all-around athlete, Doug excelled in Track and Field, qualifying for the state meet in 1973 in the 100-yard dash, where he placed sixth overall, an accomplishment he remained proud of throughout his life.
Doug was employed by Maul Technology, Omco, Howard Enterprises, and Pallet Builder Inc., retiring at the age of 65.
Doug is survived by his fiancée, Mary Kay Miller; his sister Becky (Paul) Beatty; brothers Dan (Kim) Hawley and Joe (Penny) Hawley; sisters Kim (Bruce) Clevenger and Tammy (Todd) Abernathy; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, soulmate, and best friend of 31 years, Tess Hawley; his parents, Harold and Nadine Hawley; his beloved grandmother, Dorothea Shelley; his nephew Kevin Abernathy; and his great-nephew Brogan Bosworth.
Doug will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his loyalty, generosity, humor, and the way he brought people together.
A funeral service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Voice for Christ Open Bible Church, 2229 E St Rd 32, Winchester IN, with Pastor Jeff Straley officiating the service. Burial will follow in Fountain Park Cemetery. Doug’s family would like to invite attendees to wear their favorite IU gear.
Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, March 27, 2026, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
