Carolyn Martin Obituary

Carolyn (Fields) Martin of Winchester, passed peacefully with grace, surrounded by family at the age of 73 on December 4th as a result of extended illness. Predeceased by her devoted parents Vivian Young (Mother) in 2019, Keith Fields (Father) in 2014, and; her beloved brother Curtis Fields in 1974.  She is survived by her adoring husband Ted Martin; two doting children Laura (Carson) Wallace, Steven Martin; two sisters Catherine (Fields) Chambers, Diana (Mike) Thorn; four loving grandchildren: Jaycie (Konnor) Tierney, Chelsea Martin, Miranda Martin, Ava Martin; sisters-in-law Janeil (Janet) Martin-Conners, Becky (Shaun) Laudenbacher; and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was born in Cameron, Texas alongside her twin, Catherine, in 1949. Her family moved to her father’s hometown of Winchester at an early age. She became a Hoosier, but her many trips to Texas to visit family, ride horses, and swim in the river kept her a Texan at heart.

During a senior class trip to Washington D.C., Carolyn paired up with an unexpected classmate, Ted Martin. While they scaled the Washington monument together, Carolyn became faint and Ted caught her. They fell deeply in love, married in 1969, and were inseparable partners for the next 53 years.

Carolyn attended Ball State University to follow her dream of becoming a nurse. Shortly into her college career, she was called to follow a bigger dream of starting a family. She gave birth to her daughter, Laura, in 1970 and returned home to lay the foundation for what would become a strong, close-knit family that loved fiercely.

During her 73 years of life, this inspiring, compassionate woman became many things: a wife, mother, an aunt, a grandmother, friend, and most importantly, a daughter of Christ. She proudly worked at Ohio Valley Gas for 36 years, was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution Texas Chapter, an unofficial Civil War historian alongside Ted, a (sometimes frustrated) Colts fan, a skilled gardener, an incredible chef, a “Squeal” card game extraordinaire, a respected member of the community, and a role model to all.

Carolyn “Mamaw” had two passions: Faith and Family. Her love for the Lord truly shined. This extended into the lessons and love she bestowed onto those around her. She cultivated a family with a strong, pure, unconditional love. She adored discussing history and traveling with her husband, sharing laughs with friends on Gettysburg adventures, planting rows upon rows of flowers and vegetables with Steven and Laura, chatting around the campfire on late summer nights at Steven’s house, going to craft shows with Laura, decorating an normous Christmas tree with Jaycie, Chelsea, Miranda, and Ava, praying and shopping with her sisters, and hugging on her grandchildren who were the light of her life. Her presence filled a room and her smile was infectious. She had the unyielding strength of her mother, the wit of her father, and was beautiful inside and out. We are blessed to have known and loved her. We would not be who we are today without the wisdom, strength, and heart of Carolyn Martin.
