Betty Allene Ashley, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, surrounded by her family at Ball Memorial Hospital.
Betty was born in Fooseland, IL on September 15, 1934, to Cassi and Clay Sullivan and was lovingly raised by Allene and Esco Flanagan. On April 12, 1952, she married the love of her life, Eugene Lloyd Ashley. Together they shared more than 60 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, family, and devotion, until Eugene’s passing on October 4, 2015.
Betty was the heart of her family, a devoted wife, loving mother of five, proud grandmother of eight, and cherished great-grandmother to many. She was a natural caregiver who always put others first and was a devoted dog mom to her beloved Opie.
She found joy in gardening, reading, and baking and was known for sharing her homemade treats with those she loved. Betty enjoyed time spent with friends as a member of the Red Hat Society and the Hand and Foot Ladies Card Club of Winchester.
Betty is survived by her sister Judy Gamez (Mike). Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren: Bonita Ashley-Dover (Dave); Angi Kahle (Elijah) and their children, Fletcher and Kendall Kahle; Joel Wagner (Christel) and their children, Kyle (Emma) Wagner, Zack Wagner (Maria Capuano), and Kailee Wagner (Colin Swain); and Bobby Dover (Julie) and their children, Brock and Dak Dover. Lloyd Jr. Ashley (Karen); Isaiah Ashley (Karen); Isaac Ashley (MacKenzie) and their children, Kolson, Layla, Raymon, and Romey Ashley; and Sarah Ashley. Cheryl Robbins (Bill); William Robbins (Angela); Ashley Robbins (Nick Van Holsbeke) and their child, Alex Van Holsbeke; Joan Ashley (Deeon Vance). Brenda Goforth (Bob); Travis Goforth and his children, Brooklyn and Jacklyn Goforth.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Ashley; her great grandson Brock Goforth; and her thirteen brothers and sisters.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online at Online Donations - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Betty will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and love for her family. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched, and she will be deeply missed.
