Ernest Dale Martzell, 94, of Winchester, IN died on Friday, July 27, 2018, at Summers Pointe, in Winchester.

He was born June 7, 1924, in Winchester, IN, to the late Paul and Lorena (Williams) Martzell.  He served 3 ½ years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, participating oversees in New Guinea, Admiralty Island, and the Philippines.  Following the war, he studied pre-optometry at Indiana University and received his Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from Northern Illinois College of Optometry, after which he started his optometric practice in Winchester and served the community for 52 years.

Dr. Martzell, a licensed pilot, had a zest for outdoor challenges which included flying his own home-built ultralight, motorcycling, bicycle touring and Mountaineering.  He was a past president of the Winchester Lions Club and also served six years on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Lions Eye Bank at the Indiana Medical Center.  Professionally he was a past president of the Whitewater Valley Optometric Society and a Life member of the Indiana and America Optometric Associations.  Also as a member of the Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity (VOSH), he and his wife Dorothy served on five missions to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Honduras in the 1970’s.  A devoted member of Grace Communion International, he also attended the Winchester Main Street Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Walters Martzell; step-son Dr. Edward Walters, Winchester; step-daughter Barbara (husband David) Berry; two grandchildren, Jennifer Pemberton and Bryan Martzell; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, Jeff Berry, Mariah, Simon, and Lucas Walters; and several step-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Shane Martzell; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Joanna Martzell; and his step-father Russell Bales.

A celebration of Dale’s life will be at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at the Walker Funeral Home in Winchester.  Burial with military services will follow at the Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester.

Friends and family call at from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, July 30, as well as 1 hour before the services on Tuesday, at the funeral home.

So sorry of your loss. Was unaware of Dales passing until this am. He did lead a full life and brought happiness to many who came in contact. Out thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
