Kermit Bates, 85, of Winchester passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, with his loving family by his side, at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services in Richmond, Indiana.  He fought a courageous battle with Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.  He was born on December 8, 1932, in Thornton, Kentucky, to Andy and Zettie (Tudy Johnson) Bates.  He married Oma Faye Ison on June 18, 1955, and they made their home in Winchester, Indiana.

Kermit was a true family man, who put his family first without fail.  He enjoyed every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  Oma was the love of his life, and this was evident to everyone who ever saw them together.  He lost a piece of his heart when she passed away in 2016, after over 60 years of marriage.  He was a proud fan of the Kentucky Wildcats. He was very loved and respected by all who knew him, and his absence will be felt very deeply.  His strong character and belief in doing what is right will always be remembered.  His vast knowledge of any topic and help with any task will forever be missed.

Kermit is survived by his son, Jerry Bates of Ridgeville; his daughter, Sharon Keys of Winchester; five grandchildren, Nicholas Keys, Paula (Rick) Polei, Jeremy (Sarah) Bates, Melissa (Ryan) Wilson, and Chalvis Bates; nine great grandchildren, Brayden, Lillian, Madison, Haleigh and Nolan Wilson, Elizabeth and Jeremiah Bates, Dylan and Layne Polei; his siblings, Greeley Bates, Norma Jean Pena, and Margarine Gibson; sisters-in-law, Loretta Bates, Janice Sue Bates, Madge Sergent; brothers-in-law Allen (Lester) Halcomb, Komos Ison, and several nephews and nieces, family and friends.

Kermit was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, 4 brothers (Cack Bates, Grady Bates, Herman Bates, Owen Bates), 2 sisters (Edna Bates, Molene Halcomb), his mother-in-law and father-in-law (Kelly and Callie Ison) and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.

Funeral services for Kermit will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2018, at the Walker Funeral Home, in Winchester, with Brother Aaron Whitaker and other Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating.  Burial will follow at Fountain Park Cemetery, in Winchester.

Friends and family may call from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, as well as an hour before services at the funeral home.  At 6 p.m. on Sunday there will be an Old Regular Baptist celebration of life.
