Jan D. Keener, 72, of Winchester, passed away on September 22 at Pineknoll Nursing Home. Born on April 22, 1945, in Winchester, IN to Jeanne and James Keener, Jan graduated from Lee L. Driver High School in 1963.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Andrew.

Jan worked in the glass industry his entire career, starting at Anchor Glass in Winchester, and served as an international glass consultant for several years before retirement. His working years were spent not only in the U.S., but in Australia, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and other international locations. Comments from those who worked with him said his success was based on two factors—his competence in the field and his ability to win the trust of staff and management from the start. Those he worked with internationally said that his knowledge of and experience in the field, his naturally open mind, and innate ability to understand cultures other than his own were the components of his success.  But more importantly, anyone who has ever met and spent time with Jan will tell you his kindness knew no bounds and there was no one more fun to spend time with. He will be remembered with fondness by those around the world.

A 50-year member of the Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, Jan and his wife, Jane, enjoyed the comradery of the many friends they had there.  Although Jan had only a short time in retirement, he enjoyed what time he did have by spending it with his family and friends, fishing, and riding his motorcycles.

Jan is survived by his wife of almost 16 years, Jane; a brother, James (Lisa) Keener of Winchester; and a daughter, Kim. Other survivors are nieces Melody (Mike) Charleville of the Bahamas, Amy Lawrence (Gary) of Winchester, Morgan (Casey) Dyer of Winchester, and Kirklyn and Mykah Keener of Winchester. Nephews include Andy and Chris Harvey of Winchester, Brock (Monica) Harvey of Winchester, and Seth (Brittany) Armstrong of Illinois. Great nieces and nephews include Myles and Marley Charleville, Madeline, Morgan, and Austin Lawrence; Avery Mae and Scottie Armstrong; Shayla, Wyatt, and Colton Harvey, and Kingston and Zion Dyer.

A memorial service honoring Jan’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 2 at the Towne Square Community Centre, 123 W. Franklin St., in Winchester, with Reverend Joanne Pfleiderer officiating. Calling hours will be at the Centre on Sunday, October 1 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent in memory of Jan to the Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 66, Winchester, IN 47394.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Pineknoll Nursing Home for all the competent and loving care they gave to Jan during his stay there.

Jan was one of the best. Our parents were friends and we had some great times playing as kids. In business, Jan was always a trusted source to help resolve occasional glass quality issues in companies/areas where I was. I think Jan took great pride in helping me with those issues since I was also from Winchester. Thanks Jan!
